Grants

United Way of Douglas County utilizes the funds raised from our annual workplace campaign to provide grants to nonprofit health and human service agencies and grassroots organizations to reduce poverty and build a thriving community. Learn more about our giving, here!

Basic Needs Grant
Basic Needs grants are meant to provide immediate, short-term assistance to help people stabilize a financial or health crisis to prevent homelessness, utility shut-offs, and/or the use of pay day lenders.  Our bold goal is that all Douglas County community members will have equitable access to a strong safety net of support in times of crisis.

Emergency Food and Shelter Program

The United Way administers federal EFSP funds  made available in Douglas County to supplement emergency food and shelter programs through the Department of Homeland Security/Federal Emergency Management Agency under the Emergency Food and Shelter National Board Program (EFSP). A Local Board is charged with distributing EFSP funds to help expand the capacity of food and shelter programs in high-need areas within the county. The Local Board will review applications requesting funds in the following priority areas: rent/mortgage assistance, utility assistance, mass shelter costs, other shelter, and mass feeding (served meals or food pantry).  Learn more about EFSP Grants

United Way Community Impact Fund

United Way of Greater Kansas City accepts funding proposals for grants to programs that support its Community Impact Agenda every three years.  The next Request for Proposals (RFP) is scheduled to be released in September of 2022.  Below is a sample of United Way’s funding application as well as the last RFP released by United Way in September of 2019.  While the application deadline for that RFP has passed, the document includes useful information regarding United Way eligibility criteria, past funding priorities and review process. Also posted below are the United Way Agency Standards, used by United Way to assess the organizational strength of applicant organization.  As part of the application process, United Way assesses an organization’s adherence to these standards.

To be added to the distribution list for the release of the next RFP, send an email to amy.haas@uwgkc.org  with the name of your organization, contact name and email and a one-sentence description of the program for which you hope to seek funding.

United Way Donor-Designated Giving

United Way accepts designated contributions from supporters of the annual United Way campaign, earmarked for a specific organization. This option provides non-grant funding to hundreds of area nonprofit organizations each year.

Any 501c3 organization is eligible to receive funds through this mechanism. United Way does not publish a list of organizations in this program, and there is no application form that must be submitted. Interested organizations may encourage their supporters to consider a designation to the organization. They may do so by simply asking the coordinator of the United Way campaign in their workplace for a “donor-directed giving form” when making their pledge. If they make their pledge to the United Way campaign using United Way’s online giving platform, there is a link at the bottom of the pledge form that they can use to designate their gift.
