American Red Cross

A multi-service agency that provides disaster preparedness training and relief to victims of disaster, delivers emergency communications to the military on behalf of their families, CPR, first aid, swimming lessons, lifeguard training for the citizens of Douglas County. Hosts six community blood drives annually and two week-long drives at the University of Kansas.

The Arc of Douglas County

To build our vision of a community of acceptance, we provide advocacy, education, positive behavior supports, service coordination, autism services, and support for people with developmental disabilities and those whose lives they touch. The Arc supports Self Advocates of Lawrence, a social and empowerment group for adults with developmental disabilities and special programs for brothers and sisters of children with disabilities.

Ballard Community Services

The Ballard Center, Penn House and Brookcreek Learning Center make up the Ballard Community Services. Services provided are: an affordable, high quality early education program for children infants to age six, emergency food programs, rent and utility assistance, a women's professional clothing assistance program and medical prescription assistance. Services are provided through the Ballard Center, Penn House and Brookcreek locations. BCS also provides services to the community through the Emergency Service Council.

Big Brothers/Big Sisters

The worldwide leader in youth mentoring programs, Big Brothers Big Sisters matches at-risk children ages 5 through 17 with carefully screened adult volunteers. Our community based program volunteers spend 2-4 hours each week with their Little Brother or Sister and offer new experiences, hobbies and healthy lifestyles through quality one-to-one time. Our Bigs in Schools mentoring program matches volunteers with a student in elementary or junior high school. Bigs in Schools meet once a week at school during lunch or an after school program, they spend quality individual time together and work on school related projects to improve academic performance, self confidence and attitudes about school. Big Brothers Big Sisters facilitate long term individual relationships that provide lasting results and friendships.

Boy Scouts of America

Scouting is a youth development program which helps to prepare young people to make ethical choices over their lifetime. Our goal is to help young people achieve their full potential. Programs include Cub Scouting, Boy Scouting, Venturing (high school co-ed youth) and Learning for Life (in-school program).

Boys and Girls Club of Lawrence

Lawrence Boys & Girls Club provides a safe and affordable place to spend after school and summer hours. These programs benefit the entire community by reducing juvenile crime, enabling parents to work outside the home knowing their children are in a safe, affordable environment and helping children reach their full potential. Boys & Girls Club focuses on 5 core areas; character & leadership, education & career, health & life skills, sports, fitness & recreation and the arts. Douglas County Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA)

Douglas County CASA helps abused and neglected children find safe, permanent, and loving homes. By serving as mentors and advocating in the court system for the best interests of these vulnerable children, CASA volunteers help break the cycle of abuse and neglect. Thanks to CASA, these infants, children and teens receive individual attention and spend less time in foster care, providing a better chance for a safe and hopeful future.

Douglas County Dental Clinic

The Douglas County Dental Clinic provides quality, comprehensive dental care to underserved and uninsured individuals, with a special focus on those with limited financial means and children with Medicaid and HealthWave benefits. Treatment includes emergency, preventative and restorative care. Fees for the uninsured are greatly reduced and based on a sliding scale.

Douglas County Legal Aid Society

A legal services clinic for low-income persons in Douglas County. The staff attorneys and student interns represent clients in a variety of matters that include domestic relations cases (divorce, paternity, protection from abuse, and child support) and landlord-tenant matters. The clinic also defends persons charged with crimes in the Municipal Court of Lawrence, and juvenile offenders in the District Court of Douglas County.

Douglas County Visiting Nurses, Rehabilitation and Hospice Care

Nurses, therapists, social workers and aides provide care to frail, ill or disabled persons to enable them to remain independent in their own homes. VNA also provides CareLink, an emergency response system. The Hospice Care Cottage is now open to allow patients to receive hospice services at end of life in a home like setting.

ECKAN/Just Food

ECKAN partners with the United Way of Douglas County to offer supportive assistance to those affected by the causes and conditions of poverty. Benefits include: 1) To increase the storage capacity to receive and store larger amounts of food, which both lowers the cost of food that is purchased and enables us to take larger in-kind donations. 2) To dramatically increase the ability to receive, store, and distribute food products that need to be kept frozen or refrigerated. This is often the most
nutritious food available and is only available seasonally. 3) -To reduce the feast and famine cycles of local food pantries by more
equitably distributing food products from a larger Just Food warehouse supply.

Health Care Access Clinic

Facilitates access and provides health care and medication assistance services for Douglas County residents with limited financial means who are not covered by private or governmental insurance programs by way of a staffed medical clinic, over 160 volunteer health professionals and collaborating agencies. Enhanced services include women's health, wellness counseling and expanded appointment availability.

Independence, Inc. partners with United Way of Douglas County to provide advocacy, peer support, training, transportation and community education with a goal for increasing access to physical and mental healthcare for people with disabilities. Programs include transportation to jobs and medical appointments; advocacy with employers, landlords, health providers; peer support; independent living skills training; information and referral to other agencies; assessment for Work Opportunities Reward Kansans Program; payroll and case management services for personal care attendant services on Medicaid Waiver programs; loans of durable medical equipment; assistance with applying for/appealing social security disability benefits; assistance in making home modifications or finding accessible housing.

Lawrence Community Shelter

Safe shelter and comprehensive support services and programs that provide a path to a positive future for people experiencing homelessness and people who are at risk of homelessness. Success By 6 Coalition

The mission of Success By 6 Coalition of Douglas County is to ensure that all Douglas County families of children under 6 have what they need to successfully parent their young children, thereby fostering positive parent-child relationships and preparing children for success in school and in life. Success By 6 is one of 7 original Smart Start Kansas Community Coalitions. Projects include an interagency Family Resource Team that conducts home visits to families with young children, scholarships and grants and special education and early childhood mental health consulting services to improve the quality, availability and affordability of early learning opportunities.

Tenants to Homeowners

Tenants to Homeowners, Inc. through their Lawrence Community Housing Trust Program, support the Douglas County United Way community self-sufficiency goal by providing affordable rental and owner-occupied housing for families earning less than 80% of median income. Additional programs: affordable purchase and rehabilitation program for buyers with low to moderate incomes; affordable rental for potential lower income homebuyers working to qualify for homeownership in a limited period of time; programs to keep homeownership affordable Tenants to Homeowners built energy efficient, Energy Star rated homes; 20 fully accessible, rent adjusted units that exclusively serve those with physical disabilities.
