Fairy Godmother Fund Aids Women in Need

A woman of limited financial resources, who faces a short-term critical need, may turn to the Fairy Godmother Fund, a new non-funded affiliate of the United Way of Douglas County. The Fairy Godmother organization was begun in 2003, and the Fund was established in 2005. In 2006, the Fund helped 24 Douglas County women get through crisis situations.

For example:

  • A nursing assistant lacked the $82.00 needed to buy the scrubs required for her new job, and the Fairy Godmother Fund was there to help.
  • An elderly woman was without hot water for months due to a broken water heater, and the Fairy Godmother Fund was there to help.
  • A young woman needed car repairs to get to the new job that she had just been offered, and the Fairy Godmother Fund was there to help.

The foregoing gifts averaged about $165 and made a big impact on the lives of these women. The Fund was the idea of Barbara Reavis, former United Way Director, who died of cancer in December of 2004.
The intent of the Fairy Godmother Fund is to meet needs that are not or cannot be met by any local human service agency.
