Local United Way History
The Community Chest was established in 1941 by the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce as the first organized group fundraising effort of Lawrence residents. The purpose then, as it still is today, was to meet the various social needs through the provision of human services. The initial fundraising effort produced $9000.
During the early 1950's, the name was changed to the Lawrence United Fund, the number of member agencies grew to eleven, and the fundraising goal was $46,000.
In December of 1986, the name was changed to the United Way of Douglas County, in order to reflect the growing population being served by the member agencies. The United Way of Douglas County raised $1,636,000 in 2007, and currently helps to support 26 member agencies.
The United Way of Douglas County’s Center for Human Services provides a campus-like atmosphere for the 21 nonprofit organizations that occupy its low-cost offices. The organizations thrive by being able to share resources, office equipment, conference rooms, storage space, and information, and it is through this kind of collaboration that the United Way of Douglas County takes another step towards strengthening local human services.
The following 21 nonprofit organizations currently occupy the center for human services:
